LIBERTY SLEEPING — Artist's Proof Edition of 10
Made in 2017, not long after the Brexit referendum. The feeling at the time was one I suspect many shared — that something was quietly leaving, that liberty was not being seized or fought over but simply allowed to slip away, put to sleep by the seductions of populism. That drift has not reversed. The figure sleeps on.
The model is Georgie Hobday, who appears throughout my work from this period — Girl in a Cocked Hat, Girl Ashore, Georgie — each time bringing a particular quality of self-contained stillness that felt exactly right for paintings concerned with presence and absence, with what is held and what is let go.
Liberty Sleeping was first shown at my solo exhibition with Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles — a show that also included Shadow of the Seventh and several related works. Only 3 of this edition remain.
